Color Selection in Graphic Design

Tutorial 2 with Matisse Template – Exercise 2

We will use the same template and the exact same process. This time we’ll change up the approach with the background colors.

Before -- After

Step 1
Open the Matisse template. You may download the template here.

Step 2
First, we’ll fill the background with black.

Step 3
Now we’ll fill the “streak” layer with white.

Step 4
Using white as your target color, create a palette.

Here, we’ve chosen a blue from the 20 contrast group.

Step 5
Now we’ll fill in the stars on the black background. Pick black as your target color and create a palette.

We’ve chosen a few colors from the 40 group.

Step 6
Now fill the star on the figure. Pick the blue and create a palette.

We’ve chosen a darker blue from the 20 group.

Step 6
Finally, fill the last star. Pick white and create a palette. We picked a red from the 40 group.

Another composition rapidly executed, with all contrasts accounted for. Let’s move on to exercise 3.
