Color Selection in Illustration and Painting

Tutorial 2 with Bonnard Template – Exercise 3


(Method for coloring these special template layers in Photoshop.)

Step 1
Open the Bonnard template. You may download the template here.



Step 2
Hide all layers except for L1. Choose a color for the background rectangle. Here we chose a yellow.



Step 3
A palette is created from the gray, range 60. A dark brown is chosen, and layer L2 is filled using the special layer coloring method.





Step 4
L3 is filled with a pink, chosen from a 10 range from the yellow.





Step 5
L5 is filled with a magenta, a 30 range from the color we just used.





Step 6
L5 is filled with a green, a 10 range from the yellow.





Step 7
L6 is filled with a darker pink, a 20 range from the yellow.





Step 8
L7 is filled with a blue, also a 20 range from the yellow.





Step 9
L8 is filled with a similar green to the one we already used.





Step 10
Fill L9 and L10, and L11. L9 is filled with a brighter green, a 5 range from the green we just used. L10 is filled with a pink, also a 10 range from the green. L11 is filled with another blue, a 5 range from the blue.





Step 11
Fill L12 and L13. L12 is filled with a near-white, a 10 range from the pink. L13 is filled with a bright orange, a 30 range from the darkest color.





Step 12
Fill L14, L15, L16 and L17. L14 with a darker red, a 10 range from the red. L15 with alight orange, a 30 range from the red. L16 with a lighter color, a 5 range from the previous color. And L17 with a blue, a 30 range from the darkest color.





Step 13
Fill L18 and L19. L18 with a dark purple, a 10 range from the purple on the left. L19 with a brighter purple, a 20 range from the color just used.





Step 14
Finally, fill L20 and L21.
