Master Colors finds the perfect color space

We may never find the perfect color space—visually uniform, mathematically tractable and artistically insightful—but we keep trying. The latest candidate for the honor is Master Colors. The company has reworked the Munsell color model to distribute the colors according to visual contrast ratios, we were told. The result is a color picker that artists actually can use for finding subtle relationships among colors. Conversely, the difference between two colors is expressed in a metric, steps of equal contrast, that artists will intuitively understand.

Photoshop color selection tool heightens color harmony

HVC Color Composer is a Photoshop plug-in that enhances Photoshop's Color Picker by adding hue, value, and chroma controls. The idea is that because artists perceive colors based on hue, brightness (value), and intensity (chroma), they should be able to select colors the same way. The Color Picker is easy enough to install: Just copy the Master Colors HVC Color Composer folder into Photoshop's Plug-Ins folder, choose HVC Color Composer as your color picker from Photoshop's general preferences, and you're set.

VC Color Composer plug-in released

The Photoshop Color Picker is almost as ubiquitous to many of us as our cell phones; without either, it would be difficult to function every day. Master Colors LLC has released a product that aims to change this. No, they’re not taking away our cell phones; however, the release of the HVC Color Composer (Mac only) changes the way we think about our close friend the Color Picker.

Master Colors claims that rather than presenting static palettes that have no relation to each other, HVC Color Composer can call up palettes that work specifically with colors chosen for the job. Each of the palettes is harmonically coherent so that the colors look stunning in the artwork—every time. The HVC Color Composer also opens up an infinite variety of unexpected color combinations that are sure to help spark the creativity of artists and color professionals.

Web Design—Beyond 216 Colors, Outside the Web-Safe Palette

Thinking Outside the 216-Color Box

Let’s talk a little about how we select colors in 2005. Consider this:
• The average human eye can see about 3,000,000 colors
• 72% of monitors today display millions of colors (24-32 bit)
• 25% of monitors today display thousands of colors (16 bit)

Then why do Web designers tend to keep within the old 216 “Web-safe” color palette? I realize that you don’t anymore but I’m talking about the other guy.
