Install the Master Colors HVC Color Composer in Photoshop.
Make sure you have downloaded the LESSON 1 TEMPLATE Photoshop file.
Exercise 1: 3 Color Composition
Here you will be creating a simple composition on a white background. This means you will only have to choose two colors to go on top of the white.
Step 1: Open the Master Colors LESSON 1 TEMPLATE in Photoshop. Give the template a new name using the “Save As” function.
Step 2: Highlight the second layer, titled “Original Gray”.
Step 3: Open the Photoshop Color Picker.
Step 4: Click on white in the HSB color box. White is now your “target” color.
Step 5: Click on the Auto Range function, then click create palette.
Step 6: Click on “Save” and give your palette a name, like palette.aco.
Step 7: Click OK.
Step 8: Open the Photoshop Swatch Box and click on the arrow in the upper right hand corner.
Step 9: Click on Replace Swatches, then click on the palette you saved. Your palette will now flow into the Swatch Box.
Step 10: Pick a color you like and fill in all the squares.
Step 11: Pick another color you like and fill in all the diamonds.
Congratulations. You have created your first color harmony.
Exercise 2: 5 Color Composition
Although you can pick any color for your background, for the purposes of this tutorial, we will continue to work on a white background.
Step 1: If you are continuing from exercise 1, give your document a new name using the “Save As” function.
Step 2: Now pick another color and fill in every other square. Do the same with the diamonds.
You have completed your first 5 color harmony and are well on the way to becoming a complete master of color. Don’t be intimidated by the apparent complexity of color relationships. Master Colors will give you a step by step method where very soon you will have complete control over every color in your work, no matter how many colors you are using. Now it’s time to try a color composition with a lot of colors in it.
Exercise 3: 64 Color Composition
Step 1: Reopen your original Master Colors Practice Template. Do a “Save As” and give it a new name.
Step 2: We will continue to work on the white background, so we can continue to work with the same palette. The purpose of this exercise is to create a color composition with lots of variety, so we will try to pick as many different colors as we can.
Step 3: Fill in all the squares. Try to pick a different color for each square. Do the same with the diamonds.
Now congratulations truly are in order. You have just completed an incredibly complicated color composition rather easily. This is Lesson 1. When you have completed Lesson 2, you will then truly be a master of your color.
